It’s “Post” Time Again at Churchill Downs

May 5, 2012

While Jordan is away, I’ll post about my favorite day (that was beyond cheesy but I couldn’t help myself)!

It’s Derby day everyone!

Sit back, relax, and grab a mint julep while you catch up on this year’s favorite horses and fashions!

The 2012 Kentucky Derby will air tonight on NBC post time is 6:24 pm, but tune in earlier to see the amazing hats and to pick a horse!

First and foremost, you can’t watch the Derby without an icy cold mint julep in hand (preferably in a silver julep cup!)

 Mint Julep:

2 Cups sugar
2 Cups water
Sprigs of fresh mint
Crushed ice
Kentucky Bourbon
Silver Julep Cups

*Make a simple syrup by boiling sugar and water together for five minutes. Cool and place in a covered container with six or eight sprigs of fresh mint, then refrigerate overnight. Make one julep at a time by filling a julep cup with crushed ice, adding one tablespoon mint syrup and two ounces of Early Times Kentucky Bourbon. Stir rapidly with a spoon to frost the outside of the cup. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.*

When it comes to style at the Kentucky Derby most people immediately think of the HATS!

Wide-brimmed “Southern Belle” inspired hats are usually the most popular for the Derby.

More hats from years past:

Classic straw

 Simply pink

Pink and Tangerine stunner

 Feathers galore

 pink+feathers+flower

Vineyard Vines is this year’s official style of the Kentucky Derby, here are some options from their website!

Pink Ribbon Hat

Bailey Ikat Dress

Here are two Lilly Pulitzer inspired looks; a more casual choice for the infield and more formal for members enclosures (or whatever party you’re attending):
